Meet Our Teachers

Dr. Rania Awaad

Rania Awaad M.D., is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine where she is the Director of the Stanford Muslim Mental Health Lab, Associate Chief of the Division of Public Mental Health and Population Sciences, and Co-Chief of the Diversity and Cultural Mental Health Section. She is currently a Senior Fellow at Yaqeen Institute and ISPU. In addition, she serves as the Director of The Rahmah Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating Muslim women and girls. She has previously served as the founding Clinical Director of the Khalil Center-San Francisco as well as a Professor of Islamic Law at Zaytuna College. Prior to studying medicine, she pursued classical Islamic studies in Damascus, Syria and holds certifications (ijāzah) in Qur’an, Islamic Law and other branches of the Islamic Sciences. 

Shaykh Mahmoud Shabieb

Shaykh Mahmoud Shabeib is a graduate of Al Azhar University and currently is working on his PhD in Shar’iah. Sh. Mahmoud holds advanced certifications from several renowned traditional scholars of al Azhar Mosque in the 10 recitations of the Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, and the rest of the Shar’iah sciences. He was a student of the late Sh. Ahmed Taha Rayyan, may Allah have mercy on him, and studied with him and was mentored by him for over a decade. He previously worked for Darul Iftah in Cairo as a jurist, administering legal rulings based upon the school of Imam Malik. Sh. Mahmoud currently works as an Imam in his local mosque and teaches students from all over the world in Cairo and online.


Kareem Odeh

A Safina student of many years, Kareem now studies Shafi'i fiqh and usul with Shaykh Abdurragmaan Khan and others. A tutor for over 5 years, he has taught children and teens topics ranging from test prep to karate lessons.


Umar Khattak

A very consistent, patient, and enthusiastic teacher of the Quran, Umar is dedicated to educating our children in how to recite the Quran properly. We have now expanded the Quran for Kids program to three sessions a week.

Dr. Shadee Elmasry

Currently scholar in residence at New Brunswick Islamic Center, Dr. Shadee's PhD was on the da'wa of Imam al-Haddad, focusing on elevating the standard of knowledge of the common Muslim.
